Did you know that Australians waste up to 7.3 million tonnes of food each year and that household food waste makes up 2.5 million tonnes or 34% of total waste? With 92% of the food waste in homes going directly into landfill, it’s not hard to imagine the detrimental impact all this will have on our environment.
Fortunately, there are things you can do to minimise the amount of food wasted and make your Beenyup home more sustainable.
Meal plan like a pro
It sounds like a no-brainer – and that’s because it is. Not only does planning meals save you money and time in your grocery shop but it also helps you avoid buying items you don’t need. Take a look in your fridge and pantry before leaving home and write a shopping list. Oh, and another tip? Make sure you aren’t going shopping when you’re hungry. Also, try to use up things in the freezer; there’s no point saving leftovers and freezing them if they eventually end up in the bin too.
Buy less more frequently
If you can, try to replenish fresh produce and other perishables every few days rather than buying a week’s worth in the hope that you’ll use everything. The fruit and veggies will be fresher and you won’t be tempted to make enormous portions that will be binned later. Choose quality (fresh, organic, Fairtrade or unprocessed) over quantity and your meals will be tastier for it.
Fall in love with leftovers
Did you know that 18.1% of people say that their eyes are bigger than their bellies when it comes to food waste? We recommend freezing anything you make that you can’t finish or use leftover ingredients in other meals during the week. For instance, arancini are a brilliant way to use up leftover risotto rice and breadcrumbs.
Grow your own herbs
Fresh herbs are often expensive to buy and usually wilt before you have the chance to use them all. A simple herb garden in the kitchen means you will always have a fresh supply on hand and can snip the perfect amount for your dish. You’ll also reduce your plastic packaging use too.
Start composting
Food scraps are a fantastic plant food and by throwing them in your garden’s compost heap, you can create your own nutrient-rich fertiliser. Composting is great because it allows you to add in a larger volume and greater variety of food scraps than in a worm farm. You can also throw in your garden clippings and leaves to create a really effective boost to your soil. Bunnings has some great options to suit various garden shapes and sizes.
