Art and culture are integral components of a community’s sense of place, identity and creativity. Engaging in the arts and cultural landscape of your community presents many opportunities for learning, entertainment, leisure and personal development.

Let’s explore some of Byford’s local small creative businesses.

  1. All things Art-Anna Newbey

Byford-based visual artist, Anna Newbey, specialises in acrylic and mixed media craft. Her vibrant and quirky style often depicts her interpretation of native Australian flora and fauna. On top of selling her paintings at local events and exhibitions, Newbey also runs a variety of workshops in her Byford studio for people of all ages and backgrounds. Her workshops include all painting materials, drinks (wine, soft drinks, tea, coffee) and some nibbles. She takes you step-by-step to create your own masterpiece, and no experience is necessary to participate. Some of her past events include weekend workshops at the Plantagenet Hotel, hosting pop-up market stalls at the Willeton Rotary Artisan markets, and being featured at the Gingin Arts in the Park exhibition 2022. Run by fellow artists Pete Player and Sandy De Luca, their vision is to help people create something special while sharing experiences with other like-minded individuals. A unique experience, this business offers weekend art retreats, with ‘Sessions in the Barn 2024’ dates coming soon. You’ll also find their ‘Kids in the Shed’ weekly kids art classes, private group functions, birthday party workshops and mural commissions on their official webpage. Art and your role

Supporting local artists in your community is essential to cultivating a sense of cultural identity in the place where you live as well as helping boost your local economy. Getting involved can come in many forms, not just by splashing the cash. Below are some easy and inexpensive ways to show your support for artists on your doorstep:

Share their work online: social media can be a handy tool for local businesses and artists. By sharing their work or engaging with their content online, you are helping them grow and spread their talent to a wider audience.

Participate in local events: whether it’s a gallery, exhibition or market, grab your friends or family members and show your support just by attending.

Shop locally: if you’re renovating or decorating your new home, looking for a special gift for someone, or want to experience something new, think of local artists. Handmade or independently-produced products beat generic gifts and items any day!
